SWAN Day

Support Women Artists Now Day

is a new international holiday that celebrates women artists.  It is an annual event taking place on the last Saturday of March (Women’s History Month). Please join us for the Third International SWAN Day on Saturday, March 27, 2010. By focusing attention on the work of women artists, SWAN Day helps people imagine what the world might be like if women’s art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our  lives.

Festival Mission

 

In conjunction with The Fund for Women Artists, a non-profit arts service organization dedicated to helping women artists, and WITASWAN (Women in the Audiences Supporting Women Artists Now), performance artist Deborah Magdalena called on some of South Florida’s art community leaders to celebrate and support woman artists by hosting and producing Spoken Soul Festival.

 

The festival will feature three events: SWAN Community Program – Healing Through The Arts, SWAN Spoken Soul Showcase Vol. 3 and The Vanessa Baez Memorial Women's Brunch.

Answering President Obama’s call on “Organizing for America” featured artists and production give back to their  community with SWAN Community Program – Healing Through The Arts by showing young women that arts heal and can also empower you to become a better you and live the best life you can.

 

SATURDAY MARCH 27 2010 - SWAN Spoken Soul Showcase Vol. 3

In celebration of SWAN Day (Support Women Artists Now Day) a new international holiday that celebrates women artists.  SWAN Day will be an annual event, taking place on the last Saturday of Women’s History Month. The hope of this artistic showcase is to gather funds and awareness for the featured local artists.

 

SUNDAY MARCH 28 2010 - The Vanessa Baez Memorial Women's Brunch 

"Celebrating Everyday Women With Extraordinary Courage."  The hopes of this artistic brunch is to provide an opportunity for women to not only celebrate the life of Vanessa Baez, but their own life and everyday women who succeed despite extraordinary challenges, providing an opportunity for businesswomen to network, and foster creativity through sharing and featuring fine art, poetry and a courageous guest speaker.

Michelle Masanet—Producer & President of Garnet Productions
Since establishing Garnet Productions, Ms. Massanet has been showing off the best parts of Miami as a Field Producer for prime time and cable networks. While at the same time making sure that the independent spirit with which Garnet Productions was founded is fed yearly by producing projects that showcase her talents as a writer, director, and producer. Ms. Massanet has worked as an independent contractor for the following companies: MTV, VH-1, MTV Latino, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., Dreamworks, Columbia Pictures, Telemundo, Univision, CBS Productions, and Bob Bain Productions. Her enthusiasm is met with appreciation in the south Florida community where entertainment professionals are looking to secure reliable colleagues and business associates.

Veronica Barrios-Garcia—Producer - Director
Veronica Barrios-Garcia, a talented writer, director, and producer, founded Garnet Productions in 2002 alongside Michelle Massanet. Based in Miami, Garnet Productions’ clients include MTV networks, MUN2, and Nickelodeon among others. Most notably she wrote and produced daily segments for MUN2’s hit bilingual show “The Roof,” specifically serving as main producer and head writer for the show’s Friday episodes. In addition to her work with Garnet, Veronica is also an active freelancer with a great deal of experience in production. She has worked with such landmark industry names as MTV Networks, Vh-1, MTV Latino, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., Dreamworks, Columbia Pictures, Telemundo, Univision, CBS Productions, TLC/Banyan Productions, Comedy Central, and Bob Bain Productions. Furthermore, she has served as manager in the production of major internationally broadcast shows, including the MTV Latin Premios Video Music Awards, Univision’s Premio lo Nuestro, and the Latin Billboard Awards on Telemundo NBC.

Deborah Magdalena—Critically Acclaimed Actress And Spoken Word Artist
The Puerto Rican actress, sister of Latin Grammy winner Nestor Torres, film & television credits include Sesame Street (CTW), Apollo Comedy Hour (Tribune), The Newz (Columbia-Tri-Star), Safe Harbor (WB), Billboard Latino (AZTECA-AMERICA), American Latino (LATV), Flow & Tell (SI TV), Striptease (CastleRock), Holyman (Caravan), and For Love or Country (HBO). Inspired by The Fund for Women Artists, Deborah founded of SWAN Spoken Soul Showcase an annual 2 day festival that supports women artists. “She carries with her a warm heart and refreshing vitality that is always a pleasure to be associated with” – Andy Garcia on working with Deborah

Aimee Novaton—Independent Media Professional, Writer, and Actress 

Aimee has worked with such networks as MTV/VH1 Latin America, MTV Tr3s, CBS, Food Network, Telefutura, TV Land, and TLC just to name a few. She's also helped coordinate events such as The Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards, the Art Basel Miami Beach Converse event, and Los Premios MTV 2008 and 2009. Aimee has been a lover and a supporter of the Arts ever since she was a little girl. Immersing herself as much as she could by continually exposing herself to all things creative along with donating her time and efforts to ensure others are exposed as well.

 

Amy Baez—Spoken Word Artist And Published Writer
Amy Baez is the author and publisher of What Poetic Eyes Speak, which she has promoted nationally at more than 50 feature performances and poetry workshops. She has been writing poetry for more than 20 years and has been described as powerful, passionate, and uplifting. Expressing her emotions without any hairs on her tongue, she writes what young women feel but rarely say out loud. Amy has also acted in several community theatre productions locally. Last year, she was honored to share the stage with playwright Eve Ensler in the Miami production of Any One of Us: Words from Prison.

Susan Alvarez—Portraits / Photographer
"When I Look Through The Lens, I See Beauty,"  Susan is currently a professional stills photographer specializing in portraits whose photographs and digitally enhanced art work is exhibited in private, personal and public collections in New York, California, , Hawaii, Florida, Puerto Rico and Spain. She is the recipient of two grant/fellowships for her “Celebrating Fifty” art series. Nominated for a 1994 NAACP Theatre Award for her choreography of Metrorail: The Musical Revue. Susan has accumulated impressive production credits by producing and directing dance performances and recitals in Japan, the critically acclaimed and successful Voices In Motion: A Choreographer’s Collective Series, served as script supervisor for the Pocono Playhouse, stage manager for Nosotros Theater, was house manager for The Attic Theatre, and supervised the rebuilding and refurbishing of the Inner City Cultural Center’s New Ivar Theatre. In film, she executive produced the documentary film A Mother’s Cry that explored the effects of child abuse for independent company, Films for a Purpose and was prop master for the TV film Odds and Ends. For Bosco Productions, she executive produced the cultural, traveling, cooking show, Cocinas del Mundo.
